Pastor Emeritus Alvin D. Gunther Sr is a native of Eden, Maryland. Upon graduating from high school he immediately went into the military and after completing a tour of duty he married the last Hattie Gunther with whom he was married 48 years. They were blessed to have four children. In 2005 he married Mary Savage Gunther and once again enjoys the bliss of matrimony.
In 1959 Alvin was licensed to preach the Gospel by Bible Way Church of the Lord Jesus Christ and was later ordained by the Bible Way Church of Our LordJesus Christ , Washington D. C.
In 1962 Alvin was called to his first pastorate and planted his first churchin Tarrytown, NY. Since that time he has served numerous charges including, AME ZION Church in Port Jervis, NY. ;Mother African Union Church, Wilmington, Delaware; AME Zion Church, Camden, NJ; Saint Paul AME Zion Church, Ellenville, NY; Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church,
Catskill, NY; Bethany Presbyterian Church Washingtonville, NY; (2 charges) AUMP Church, Goshen, NY.
He was a graduate of Miller University of Theology and holds a Masters Degree. In 1989 Alvin retired from the Mid Hudson Psychiatric Center in Middletown, NY. He retired from the ministry in 2001 but found that God was not through with him yet and in 2002 he planted the Hope Chapel Church of Christ in Salisbury Mills, NY where he had served as Pastor/ Teacher. In 2011 he retired and stayed involved with the Church as Pastor Emeritus until he went to be with the Lord in June of 2016.
